Preston County, WV

Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. is a non-profit social service agency providing services to seniors and individuals with functional disabilities throughout Preston County, WV. Our services are designed to assist older residents with living more independently in their retirement years.

Our History

Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. was organized during the summer of 1974 by a group that included several county seniors, Jan Shackleford (a placement student with the Region VI Area Agency on Aging), and county representatives. They held a public meeting to organize Preston County Senior Citizens as the county senior citizens’ organization that would serve Preston County. At the time of its inception, senior citizens clubs had already been organized in Aurora, Terra Alta, Rowlesburg, and Kingwood, WV. The main offices of Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. were initially housed in the basement of the Preston County Courthouse in Kingwood.

Staff and Services

The organization was legally incorporated in August of 1975, with F. Morgan Barr of the Aurora area serving as the first chairman of the Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. Board of Directors. Lucy Tasker Kelly of the Terra Alta Club served as the first secretary. Jan Shackleford was hired as the first project director. A part-time secretary/bookkeeper was also hired. As the organization grew, a part-time nurse and outreach worker were hired to provide services to the seniors of Preston County. Nutrition services were later added through funding received from the North Central West Virginia Community Action Agency, with services provided at the Newburg and Kingwood schools.

Initial Funding

Most of the funding throughout the first several years of operation was received through federal, state, and local resources (including allocations from the County Commission and other donations). Our budget for the first year was $12,600. Over the years, our funding sources have increased with contributions received from various federal, state, and local sources.

Budget

The Agency budget now stands at approximately $3,000,000.00, which enables us to employ 13 full-time and 180 part-time employees who provide services throughout the entire County. While the budget and staff of Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. remains relatively small in comparison to similar social service agencies, we are called upon to deliver services to an extensive number of residents throughout Preston County in need of our assistance. More than 1,500 individuals (and their families) receive services each year.

People Helping People

Today, our employees remain committed to our mission. As compassionate professional service providers, we truly care about the people we serve.

Our accomplishments over the past 46 years would not have been possible without our dedicated Board of Directors who has been resolute in their commitment to helping Prestonians in need. Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. is truly an agency of People Helping People.
